Based on the development of mRNA new coronavirus vaccines, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have been proven to be an effective drug delivery method for the delivery of RNA drugs and vaccines. LNPs encapsulate easily degradable active ingredients, which mimic low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), and are ingested by endogenous pathways. LNPs are sensitive to pH and are designed to release their payload into the cytoplasm. This will be the first large-scale use of nucleic acid lipid nanoparticles in the history of vaccination. New medical developments have made drugs and their active ingredients increasingly complex and have brought new challenges. For example, oligonucleotides are easily degraded in the human body. The latest research shows that LNPs can form a stable environment for protecting active ingredients (such as RNA, mRNA, siRNA or DNA-based API). Nucleic acid drugs and optimization of delivery routes to target cells are currently very hot research areas.
